迪安·马丁27岁时才想起要成为一名职业歌手，他说自己之所以成为歌手是因为厌倦了擦窗工人的生活。在他27岁那年，他立志要成为一名歌手。于是他便在 Sammy Watkin 乐队里开始了他的演唱生涯。在这之前，他曾在煤气站工作过，还当过拳击手、钢铁工人、矿工、药房会计、工厂工人、赌场分牌员等。马丁被誉为五、六十年代的抒情王子，在美国音乐界有过巅峰时刻。同时，马丁也是美国当时身价最高的电视明星之一。1946年，他同年轻的喜剧演员 Jerry Lewis 在俱乐部里的一场即兴发挥获得了意外的成功，很快他们便成为美国最热门的喜剧搭档，而 Dean 也从此踏上了灿烂的星光大道。
迪安1948年与国会唱片公司签约。摇滚时代前他的上榜歌曲有《我将永远爱你－I’ll Always Love You》、《如果－IF》、《你属于我－You Belong to Me》、《那就是爱情－That’s Amore》、《摇动-Sway》。1955年他录制了泰利·吉尔吉逊（Terry Gilkyson）创作的歌曲《记忆是如此造成的－Memories are Made of This》，并于1956年1月14日进入榜首， 停留5周。
那就是爱情－That’s Amore，曾作为电影《魔法情缘》与香港电视剧《珠光宝气》剧中插曲。
